पहाड़ में जाति या जाति में पहाड़: पहाड़ी कहावतों की ज़ुबानी

एक प्रदेश जहां तीन चौथाई से अधिक आबादी उच्च जाति के लोगों की है वहाँ जाति कर प्रश्न पर लोगों कि चुप्पी का जवाब यहाँ कालांतर से प्रचलित कहावतों में मिल सकती है।

पता नहीं क्यूँ, जाति के सवाल पर आज के उत्तराखंड के बुद्धिजीवी गौण हैं। पर इतिहास में पहाड़ी समाज और
संस्कृति कभी जाति के विषय पर मौन नहीं था और अगर मौन होता तो उपरोक्त लिखी कहावत पहाड़ी इतिहास का
हिस्सा नहीं होते।

कुछ अलग और अनोखा अनुभव है क़िस्सों, कहानियों और कहावतों के आधार पर इतिहास को समझना। (स्त्रोत) कहावतें
बनती है बिगड़ती है बदलती है पर हम हमेशा वर्तमान की घड़ी में ही उन इतिहास की कहावतों को ढूँढते रहते हैं।
ऊपर लिखा पहाड़ी कहावत जैसी इस लेख में जाति से सम्बंधित निम्नलिखित कम से कम पचास कहावत हैं जिससे इतिहास में पहाड़ों में होने वाले
जाति विभेद को समझ सकते हैं पर ये तभी हो पाएगा जब हम इतिहास को इतिहास की कसौटी पर परखें न कि
वर्तमान की घड़ी पर।

जाति
  1. निम्नलिखित पहाड़ी कहावतों जाति के प्रश्न पर हमें बहुत कुछ बताता है।
  2. 1. डूम की डुम्याण बोक्या कि बोक्याण कखि नीजांदी (The peculiar smell of a Dum and a he-
    goat never dies out).
  3. 2. मुख लगै ड़ुमणि (निम्न जाति की महिला) ल्या गुस्याणि लूण (if you are kind to a Dumani (low caste woman) she will take the opportunity to ask for salt).
  4. 3. भात खादुक जात पुछद (After having eaten rice from a man’s hand to enquire about
    his caste) (it is believed that after eating rice (not other kinds of food) from a
    man’s hand you can refuse him nothing, no matter which caste he belongs).
  5. 4. खसम बोलिक डूम (निम्न जाति का पुरुष) पर हाथ (A caste woman lays her hand upon a Duma (low caste
    man)(applied to one who thoughtlessly does something wrong)
  6. 5. फ़रफ़ते मेरि कुंडली क़थे (A Dum is in the habit of using this phrase all day and night
    going in and out of his house asking ‘where is my wooden dish’).
  7. 6. काला कालों कि एक जात (जाति) (Applicable to the union of wicked persons)
  8. 7. गना डूमको (निम्न जाति) गाइयो नि गाइयो (The singing of a Duma with goitre is no singing at all)
  9. 8. नाज़ कुनाज़ ड़ुमन मोटी (The bad grain, fat woman and strong Dumani are of no use)
  10. 9. ख़सिया (निम्न जाति) नै जाड़ो बामाण खै जाड़ो (A khasiya (low caste) feels cold after bathing and a
    Brahman after dinner).
  11. 10. चोरो को माल चंडाल ख़ौ पाप को माल प्राचिता जौ (stolen property is enjoyed only by low
    caste but property obtained by sin has to be spent in atoning for the crime).

  1. 11. भलदा मरिगयो भली भै डुम कुड़ी आगो लागो भली मै (bear was killed was a good thing but
    the house of Duma was burned down was also a good thing)
  2. 12. खसम बोलिक डूम पर हाथ (Applied to one who thoughtlessly does something wrong)
  3. 13. डूम दगड़ि गूगेलि (A quarrel with a low caste man is like playing with human excreta)
  4. 14. आपणो खाणु खाणो डूम थें छुवे मांगणो (The food of a higher caste is considered defiled
    and only fit to be throwaway if it is touched by Duma).
  5. 15. भीं न भाना डूमका हाना (This is made use of to represent a very haughty person who
    has no more reason to be proud than a Duma has. A haughty version is
    represented by a Duma).
  6. 16. बिगच्युं डूमख़िरिमा लूण (A very proud Duma who goes beyond the limits of his caste
    puts salt in the rice milk, instead of sugar).
  7. 17. और न देंद हाको डाको आप रांडन हुड़किया राखो (A female who lectures others on chastity
    is herself in love with a drummer (Hurhakiya is a man of the lowest caste even
    among the Dumas)
  8. 18. जातन मे बाडिया सागन मेजडिया (Of all castes the Barhiya (gardener) is the worst and
    of all vegetables the Jarhiya (Roxburgh).
  9. 19. डूमकी तौली बोद कि बिठाणा कबारि जौं (The Duma’s vessels says, “when shall I go to
    the dwellings of the Bithas?”) (A Dum is always anxious to mix with the Bithas
    (Patricians). Even an injury done by a Bitha to a Dum is welcomed by him so long
    as it also disgraces the Bitha caste).
  10. 20. भाट का बाडया भीतनाई लींड गाढ़या (If a Bhat (a caste of Khassia Brahmans who beg
    for any and every one by singing their praises and will even take money out of a
    dead man) increases they ease themselves inside their houses).

  1. 21. डूम त्वे मैराखुलो चोरी जारी नाकरी (O, Duma I shall keep you if you do not commit theft
    and adultery) (Duma are very useful as they do all kinds of works in agriculture,
    house building etc)
  2. 22. पाँच लाइ निखोणी डूमन दसलाइ निखोणी बीठन (A Dum ought not to quarrel for the sake
    of five rupees and a Bitha (patrician) for ten rupees).
  3. 23. डूम को ब्या आंखनडा (The marriage of Dum pains the eyes).
  4. मागाल सहेव गोत्र गाल निसहेव (One can tolerate the slandering of this mother but not
    that of his caste)
  5. 24. डूम ग्वेर बाग बखर वालो (To make a Dum cowherd, and a leopard a shepherd) (Dums
    will eat beef, and so cannot be trusted with the care of cows).
  6. 25. डूम हलन मल खांदि दांव जल (Duma will neither plough nor manure the field but at
    dinner time is envious).
  7. 26. सबन है ठगनाई (A barber is the greatest cheat of all)
  8. 27. मकी तौली बोद कि बिठाणा कबारि जौं (The Dum’s vessels says, “when shall I go to the
    dwellings of the Bithas) (Sanskritization).
  9. 28. धेला कि डूमनि टकाको मिज़ाज (A Dumani worth nothing has the pride of worth).
  10. 29. भीं न भाना डूमका हाना (To represent a very haughty person who has no reason to be
    proud than a Duma has).
  11. 30. खसम बोलिक डूम पर हाथ (Applied to one who thoughtlessly does something wrong).
  12. 31. भलदा मरिगयो भली भै डूम कुड़ि लागो भली भै (the bear was killed, that was a good thing, but
    that the house of the Duma was burned down was also a good thing). (This
    saying originated from the story of a bear who once entered the house of a Duma
    after honey in a hive, and accidentally set fire to the house by stirring up the
    cinders. So, according to the higher castes (Bithas) of Gangoli, “two birds were
    killed by one stone.”)
  13. 32. बीठ (उच्च जाति) को निछनू डूमको मरणु के निजाणनु (Bithas are always supposed to be wealthy, and
    Doms are a low and disregarded class, whose death is a matter of no concern)
  14. उपरोक्त वर्णित जाति सम्बंधित कहावतों के अलावा पहाड़ों में अन्य कहावतें भी प्रचलित है। जाति से सम्बंधित ऐसी कहावतें हिंदुस्तान के लगभग सभी हिस्सों में मिल जाएगी। ये कहावतें रोज़ बनती और मिटती है।

  1. thank for sharing the information which does not looks like profitable today. The cast system has dragdown the country in a very poor condition, may be this was profitable for some people but not for all .as I red that the word has been used for a particular society which shows the mentality of people ,I suggest that nobody should keep this mentality for long ,it will always make a big conflict in the society, mainly I would like to suggest my own state people please forget what happened in past, grow in a positive thought, thanks for all.
